Gallage
helps Petes to dramatic outright win
By Bernie Wijesekera
An outstanding all-round performance by S. Gallage ( who had a match
bag of 10 for 71) and an aggressive and attractive unbeaten 43 (with
five fours and a six) helped St. Peter's to post a dramatic four
wickets win with seven balls to spare in their Inter-Schools Lemonade
Trophy cricket encounter at Campbell Place yesterday.
St.Peter's
in reply to Nalanda's first innings total of 184 were 51 for two
overnight. Continuing their innings yesterday, they were baffled
by the wiles of leg spinner Gihan Rupasinghe (5 for 39) and off-spinner
D. Kuveju (3 for 31) and were bowled out for 124 - conceding a first
innings win to the home team. The pitch was somewhat dusty and was
taking much turn.
Gallage, bowling
to an immaculate line and length had Nalanda tottering at 56 for
nine. But a gallant last ditch stand between all rounder Gihan Rupasinghe
(27) and Kariyapperuma (4) helped them to get 90.
Set to make
147 runs in 35 overs the Peterites, after an uncertain start, were
helped by a fighting 67-run stand for the sixth wicket between Gallage
(43 n.o) and N. Wijeratne (25), which helped the visitors to gain
a thrilling outright win with seven balls to spare.
The Nalanda
fielding had much to be desired after their dismal batting in the
second innings. It was Nalanda's second outright defeat. Earlier
they lost to St. Sebastian's, Moratuwa.
The Peterites
take on Ananda tomorrow at Bambalapitiya. English umpire Morley,
who is here for the award ceremony to the 16 'golden oldies', retired
senior umpire on Thursday January 30, will umpire.
