If
this third attempt is implemented and it gets across the sea
it will be Sri Lank's first sea bridge connecting two land
points, Trincomalee and Kinniya. A foundation stone for such
a bridge was first laid in 1974 but it was lost in the sea.
Again another foundation was laid in 1994 but that too was
drowned and was never heard of again. Now the Saudi Development
Fund has come forward to help build this 400 metre bridge
at a cost of Rs. 500 million. Eastern Development Minister
Rauff Hakeem with parliamnetarians M.A.M.Maharoof and M.S.Thoufeek
joined Saudi development expert Mohamed S. Al Arifi and other
officials in an assessment visit a few days ago. Officials
said that this time they were determined to go ahead and the
project would take off within weeks. -Pic. by Sinniah Gurunathan
