LTTE now remands a cop
By Chris Kamalendran
The LTTE on Friday 'remanded' a police constable who was taken into custody after he mistakenly ventured into an LTTE-controlled area in the Jaffna peninsula.
Reserve Police Constable Ananda Gunesekera was remanded by a Kilinochchi LTTE court on Friday until March 14. RPC Gunesekera was arrested after he accidentally went into LTTE-controlled area while on his way to report to duty at a new station. The policeman was in uniform.

Stationed in Thellipalai police post for several months he was transferred to Muhamalai on Thursday. After he reached Jaffna he boarded a CTB bus to go to Muhamalai. Reaching the last Army checkpoint in Muhamalai, the constable had inquired from the sentries directions to the Muhamali police post. He was directed to proceed further. Not knowing that he was heading towards LTTE-controlled area, the constable journeyed in the bus passing the no man's land and into LTTE area.
The LTTE arrested him for entering their area in uniform and handed him to the Pallai LTTE police station.

The policeman had retained a lawyer who appealed for his release as he had entered the area by mistake, but the request was turned down. Meanwhile, the soldier who has been taken into custody by the LTTE after entering into an LTTE-controlled area has been remanded until March 24.

The case came up on February 13 for the third time but his lawyer’s request for release was turned down. The LTTE police stated that investigations into the incident had not been completed. The soldier was arrested by the LTTE in Welioya on Christmas eve. The Sunday Times learns that both service personnel are detained at the Killinochi detention centre.
