State
prosecutor under probe by corruption commission
By Ayesha R. Rafiq
The Bribery and Corruption Commission has launched an investigation
into allegations against a very senior state prosecutor in the Attorney
General's Department.
Both Attorney
General K.C. Kamalasabeysan PC and Bribery and Corruption Commission
Chairman Ananda Coomaraswamy refused to admit or deny the fact that
an investigation has commenced against this officer on charges of
corruption under the Bribery Act.
Files have
been called for from the Attorney General three weeks ago. The Commission
is, however, yet to receive the files from the Attorney General
despite having asked for them three weeks ago. Sources said that
this could be due to the fact that the files required were large
and had to be assembled and photocopied.
The Commission is investigating allegations that a former state
counsel who later reverted to the private bar was involved in an
immigration and human smuggling scam.
Senior lawyers
of the Attorney-Gerenal’s Department had last year complained
to the Attorney General and reiterated complaints made by the Criminal
Investigations Department that there was a 'peculiar pattern' of
discharging cases, especially those connected with immigration and
human smuggling due to what was termed 'lack of evidence.'
Despite foreign
immigration authorities contacting the AG's Department and agreeing
to give evidence in certain instances the accused had been expeditiously
discharged from court proceedings. |
