President promoted
Jayakumar Thangavelu, the youngest Thomian boxer to lead the school's
team at the age of 15 has been elevated to the rank of D.I.G. Police.
An outstanding Public Schools boxer, he has won many titles in the
"Stubbs" and Nationals. He was a scientific boxer who
was later picked to represent the Sri Lanka schools in the Indo-Ceylon
meet which was a regular event in the schools' boxing calendar during
his time - 1960-63.
'Thanga' joined
the Police in 1968 as a sub-inspector. It was hard grinding to reach
the top, which he earned on merit. Amiable 'Thanga' is an "officer
and a gentleman" and has been in the forefront of Sri Lanka
sports - especially boxing.
When he was
interviewed by The Sunday Times after his elevation to the rank
of DI he said he is very thankful to his parents and his alma mater
for whatever that he has achieved in life.He was coached in boxing
by Mr. Wolsey Fonseka. Boxing was his first love. He taught his
charges always to indulge in a straight left plus better ring craft
to outbox the opponent.-BW

Rugby annual tourney in March
The Western Province Rugby Football Union will hold their sixth
annual tournament starting on March 4 onwards. This 15-a-side under-24
tournament will herald the year 2003 rugby season.
The tournament
gives playing opportunities to schoolboys who are just out of school
to continue their rugby at competitive level. This open tournament,
is not confined to Clubs in the W. Province, but all rugby playing
clubs are eligible to participate. All players should be under-24
years on Jan. 1,2003.Entries close on Feb 27 with the Administrative
