'The
Recruit': Theme of Spies never Die
By
Harinda Vidanage
Roger Donaldson the maker of, Species, Dante's
Peak and The Thirteen Days brings into life the intriguing interior
of the CIA or the infamous intelligence Agency of the United States
in his new venture The Recruit.
The theme of
the movie yet again is on intelligence and counter intelligence
games as many movies have featured through out the past few years.
The movie opens a unique dimension to the theme selection. Instead
of deadly chases, gun blazing agents, the good guys and the bad
guys, it features an unveiling of making of a CIA agent and that
the agent has no room for emotion or trust.
The movie is
concentrating on a whiz kid who graduates with honors, approached
by an unknown person who wants to make him a top agent for the States
leading intelligence gathering outfit.
The selection
of the cast is quite intriguing and interesting as well, an upcoming
young star Collin Farrell is Jim Clayton the recruit while Al Pacino
is Agent Burke who becomes father figure to Clayton and his mentor
who recruits him to the Agency and puts him through training sessions
which are given a huge priority in the movie. They are supported
by Bridget Moynahan as Layla, Gabriel Macht as Zack and Mike Realba
as Ronnie.
As One thing
leads to another and before long, Clayton is being all that he can
be at the agency's training compound, where future black-baggers
major in torture and technology while Farther like Burke drones
on about duty and country.
He regards
the CIA's mission as an intriguing alternative to an ordinary life,
but before he becomes an Operations Officer, James has to survive
the Agency's secret training ground (Code named The Farm in real
time), where Green recruits are moulded into seasoned veterans.
As Burke teaches him the ropes and the rules of the game, James
quickly rises through the ranks.
Although the
training looks neat, target practice one moment, surveillance the
next the writers insist on wedging love and intrigue into the mix.
Not surprisingly, Clayton's affair with another recruit Layla (Bridget
Moynahan) generates more suspense, mainly because the dating game
seems even more fraught with peril and paranoia than the spying
game.
But the movie
takes a turn when Burke puts him into a mission to root out a mole
instantaneously when Clayton begins to rethink what is happening
to him and his relationship with Burke. This leads to the climax
of the movie with the emerging of the double agent factor and Clayton's
realization why the CIA has some fiery old maxims as "trust
no one" and "nothing is what it seems."
The movie writers
for the Recruit Kurt Wimmer and Mitch Glazer share between them
credits for writing Equilibrium, The Thomas Crown Affair, Sphere,
Great Expectations, Scrooged, Three of Hearts and Public Enemy.
The story is based on a real case of Harold Nicholson, a double
agent who taught at the CIA's Farm (Camp Peary, VA) from 1994 to
1996 who had been spying for the Russians.

the infatuation of a teenager with his next-door neighbour, (played

High Court.
The Nepali

scenes in the film and filed an appeal before Mumbai High Court
for deletion of those scenes. In the first instance the court issued
a stay order on the producer, the director and the distributors.
Later the court dismissed Manisha's appeal to delete objectionable
shots in the movie and restraining producer from releasing the film
until the settlement of the matter raised by the actress. The judges
vacated the injunction granted earlier on the exhibition of the
movie, setting the stage for an all India release of the film.
However it
was said that another Indian actress Jessica Choksi had played Manisha
Koirala's body double in the movie.
The film was
later released in India and Nepal the home country of the actress.
The film is the story of a curious teenager Aditya (played by Aditya
Seal) who has been left under the care of his grandmother by his
career-conscious parents. Alone and bored, Aditya spends his time
training his telescope on a young and buxom girl Manisha (Manisha
Koirala) living in a flat right opposite him. Soon Aditya's hobby
turns into infatuation as he begins to follow her movements closely.
He feels sexually drawn towards her when he sees her coming out
of her bath, her hair dripping wet. He feels jealous when he catches
her making love with her boyfriend (Ranvir Shourie).
All this while
Manisha is unaware of her secret admirer. And when the young boy
musters up the courage and speaks his heart out to Manisha she takes
it in her stride and gives him a little teaser on adolescent love.
