wins Akuressa mini poll

The People's Alliance won the Akuressa Pradeshya Sabha election
held yesterday, returning 10 members to the 21-member council. The
JVP won six seats while the Sinhale Mahasammatha Bhumuiputhra Party
which was unofficially backed by the UNP won 5.
The PA received
15,084 votes while the JVP and the Bhumiputhra Party got 11,538
and 10,381 votes. A 65 percent turnout was reported. The two independent
election monitoring bodies PAFFREL and CMEV said that the elections
were free and fair, except for a few incidents.
According to
police, seven persons were arrested for impersonation. Police recorded
18 cases of pre-election violence while eight complaints were recorded
yesterday. Matara District Returning Officer P.S. Ediriweera confirmed
that in spite of a few incidents, the counting of votes took place
in a calm environment. Five hundred officials and 700 police officers
had been commissioned for election duty. |
