A perfect evening from Bishop's
They say they've got everything that would constitute the perfect evening's entertainment. Is that possible, I mutter, hoping that the words were inaudible. "But we do," say the Interactors of Bishop's College enthusiastically listing everything that is in store for anyone making their way to the Bishop's College auditorium tonight.

"Our curtain raiser is unique in itself," say Dulna Perera and Shanika Yapa. "It is to be a mix of every dance that you could probably conjure up an image of."

But that's not all.

Other items on the programme include jazz, Latin and freestyle dancing teamed with their eastern contemporaries. The music will be provided by both the Eastern and Western bands of the school. The organising committee, which consists of 13 members of the club chorus that, "There's another item where both bands will perform a duet on stage."

The strains of Unchained Melody reach our ears. Singing? "We've got plenty of that too," laughs Shanika adding that the group that's rehearsing at the moment are also to sing classics such as Yesterday, I Can't Help Falling In Love With You and What a Feeling from Flashdance.

And drama? "We will be performing a version of Cinderella with a twist," they say mysteriously. And what does that entail? "In our version, Cinderella is not the Perfect Woman, and the Prince is not the Perfect Man. It is Cinderella's supposedly haughty sister who is the ideal, and it is Honoria (one of the wicked stepsisters) who is truly in love with the Prince as he is with her. It's a fine soup that is definitely worth watching!"
The cast of the play includes Hashintha Jayasinghe and Subha Wijesiriwardene as Lavinia and Honoria, Shani Dharmasena as the godmother, Tiasha Renganathan as the photographer, Tehani Renganathan as the Prince, Eshanya Weerawarne as the supposedly wicked stepmother and Anjuli Gunaratne as Cinderella.

"We've been working on the show since January, and the biggest dispute amongst the organising committee was over the name of the show!" they laugh. "For two weeks, we did little else except go through everything we could think of to come up with a suitable name. Nothing else could be done until that was decided upon, as even the letters that we were to write needed the name of the event. Finally, we were given an ultimatum and Phenomena it became as the event is a mix of the remarkable and the extraordinary."

Since 2000, the Club has been helping out at the Sanghamitta Lama Balika Nivasa in Dehiwela. "When we visited them for the first time, they performed a dance which really caught our eye. That was when we decided that whenever we organise a variety show we should also include an item put together by them." And that item is to be another highlight of this evening's entertainment.

The main sponsor of the event is the Academy of Business Studies, whilst co-sponsors include Phoenix Industries (Pvt.) Ltd, Mast Lanka (Pvt.) Ltd, House of Fashions and Colourcon (Pvt.) Ltd. Media Sponsors include E FM and E TV.
