Classic
FM targets mature market
The grand
draw of the Rolling Stones Indian Tour Contest was held last week
at the Vibrations.
The lucky winners
of the contest are Ronan Halpe and Shiyana Mushin. The competition
was organised by Classic FM and the winners will fly to India by
courtesy of SrLankan Airlines.
The Classic
Radio 92.6 FM is the newest FM Radio Channel which broadcasts from
its main studios at Depanama for eighteen hours a day from 6.00
am to 12.00 midnight.
'Classic Radio
caters to listeners in the age group 35+ years, diverse but mature
market. The music ranges from standards , rock'n roll to disco,
country and light rock and spans four decades the 50's 60's, 70's
and 80's. In addition to that, the station has two hours of programming
a week dedicated to Classical Music.
'In keeping
with Classic Radio's commitment to keep its listeners satisfied,
we have adopted the Magazine type format for Saturday and Sunday'
said June Santana, the programming Manager of Classic FM, popularly
known as Steven Stone.
'On Saturdays
from 1.00 pm to 4.00 pm, Roger Burnrs hots 'The Plantium Zone',
a collection of oldies not normally heard on our regular programming
coupled with interesting information regarding events behind the
artistes and the songs.' he added.
'The Classical
Concert' hosted by Steven Stone is slotted in from 9.00 pm to 10.00
pm on Saturdays and features complete classical works, in the format
of a Classical Concert, so that listeners can sit back relax and
take in the whole concert in the comfort of their music room.' said
Nihara Bandaranaike of Classic FM.
On Sunday's,
Roger Burns comes back for another three hour get-together on the
Country Crowd from 1.00 pm to 4.00 pm, where the country fans can
hear only the best of Nashville. Listen to the songs of Kenny Rogers,
Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton and more on the Country Crowd.
At 9.00 pm
on Sundays, Steven Stone returns for another hour of Classical Music
with "An Evening with Masters". This time he presents
popular movements from various works of classical music with brief
commentaries on each piece.
Classic Radio
92.6 is now the Radio Sponsors of the Symphony Orchestra of Sri
Lanka.
'Leisure
Park' for holiday makers in Nuwara Eliya
The holiday
maker to Nuwara Eliya this season can look forward to numerous activities
planned out by the Municipal Council.
Eagle's Eye
Promotion, a new event management and entertainment consultancy
firm has set up a 'leisure park' in close proximity to Lake Gregory.
Its situated just out of the town on the Badulla road on bank of
the lake and will have a traditional Sri Lankan food court named
"Ambula", a beer garden, a Discotheque and Videotheque
inclusive of Karaoke Singing area, which will be handled by the
Sound EFX Team, Kiddies Corner with a lot of play items and many
more. Among the restaurants will be the popular "Delifrance
Mobile".
"We have
laid the park in such a manner that the whole family could come
and relax, have a good meal and maybe dance away and really enjoy
the climate of Nuwara Eliya" said the Director of Eagle's Eye
Promotions, Shehan de Tissera.
Sooriya Show is back
The popular 'Sooriya Show' will come alive on BMICH on May
4 at 6.30.
Indrani, Rani
Mallawarachi, Dalreen, Noeline, Winslow Six Mendis Foursome, A.E.
Manoharan, Rajiv, Susil Fernando, Priyantha Fernando, Dharmaratne
Brothers, Los Flamencos, La Bambas, Anil Bharethi, Victor Silva
and Paul Fernando will be featured at this show.
The Sooriya
Show was initially a weekly radio programme that drew thousands
of listeners, who unfailingly kept a radio date every Thursday night
for many years since the year 1969. The fans would eagerly wait
every week either to hear again the songs and melodies which had
tugged at their heart strings while having the opportunity of hearing
the latest releases on the 'Sooriya' recording label, which unfailingly
captured the best from the latest in talent that was emerging.
The late Clarence
Wijewardena, Milton Malawarachchi, CT Fernando, H R Jothipala and
M S Fernando accounted for some of the outstanding hits on the 'Sooriya
label as did others who are yet in the frontline of showbiz, such
as Annesley Malawana, Indrani Perera, Anil Bharetti, A E Manoharan,
Noeline Honter, Dalreen Suby, Paul Fernando, La Bambas and Dharmaratne
Brothers to name just a few.
Groups like
Winslow Six, Los Flamencos, Mendis Foursome and the Fortunes (led
by the late Stanley Peiris) came to the fore through Sooriya Records
as did singes like Victor Silva.
The man behind
the Children's bookshop which was then located at Queen's Street,
Fort (near the clock tower) and which was identified as the city's
top Record Shop, Mr. Gerald Wickreme-sooriya made a significant
contribution and provided a great impetus both to the music scene
and musicians by recording and promoting the prowess of gifted artistes
throughout the 1970's. It would indeed be a tribute to him, if we
are to see again, the much loved 'Sooriya Show' on stage; said Damayantha
Kuruppu of D R Entertainments the present producer of the show.

According to
the design of the show, this will be that day's show for today!
The glamour and glitter of exotic lighting and spectacular dance
forms, intrinsically woven into the presentation, will make this
'Sooriya Show' take on the lustre of the new millennium, yet retaining
the unfading beauty of the original flavour of the music, that many
will throng to savour, when the'Sooriya Show' comes alive with the
prestitgious compering of the all time presenter of the 'Sooriya
Show', whether on radio or on stage, the incomparable Vijaya Corea.
'Le Garage Night'
'Le Garage
Nite' with YES FM DJs will be held at the 'Le Garage' of Le Kandyan
Hotel on April 19 from 10.00 pm.
Popular YES
FM DJ Tom Hart and his team, DJ Shiran D. DJ Shane, DJ Roshan, DJ
Mike Raly, DJ Pierre, DJ Anaza and DJ Michael will be the main attraction
of the night.
Seven DJ's
on one stage, one place, one night with Back to Back Sessions of
different style of Deejaying will be a real life time experience
of this DJ Nite.
'But this is
not a DJ competition', said Rehan N. Razeen, the Manager of 'Le
GArage'.
