Cricket, music and cats
Voted most popular schoolboy cricketer and having toured with the national and under 19 Lankan cricket teams overseas, Jehan Mubarak is a face of the future for cricket fans. Here he tells Ishani Ranasinghe all about his interests.

Cricket: Of course, of course. Playing since age 11 for his school Royal College, Jehan says that touring with the national team was quite a different experience. Even though he had played for the Sri Lankan Under 19 squad, it was a huge leap. "You may know what you have to do, but once you are on the field, it doesn't always come out like that," he says. According to him, it's something that comes with experience. "Hopefully, I can put the experience I got into practice if I get back into the team."

Master batsman Aravinda de Silva is a cricketer Jehan looks up to, especially because, "In South Africa he helped me a lot to correct my mistakes and improve my technique."

Sports: Apart from cricket, Jehan also likes all other sports in general. "I used to swim for school those days," he said. He also likes watching other sports, especially rugby and soccer. "Anything other than golf. That's too boring to watch," he laughs.

Movies: whenever he has free time, he likes to sit back, relax and watch movies. Schindler's List is his favourite, while he rates Forrest Gump highly too, as Tom Hanks is one of his favourite actors along with Liam Neeson. He prefers suspense and satirical movies.

Dramas: Having taken part in Shakespeare drama competitions and school productions, Jehan likes to go see plays whenever possible. "I am not really picky about the kind of plays I watch, as long as they are interesting," he added.

Animals: Jehan owns three cats and one golden retriever, so you can certainly call him an animal lover. "Two of my cats are Topsy and Whisky but the other is yet to be named as I just found it," he says stroking the cat which he had picked up from the road while it in turn attempts to bite his finger. His huge dog is named Goldie. Jehan confides in us that it likes to sleep more than anything else in the world.

Travelling: Getting to see new places is what he likes best about travelling. "I like to see different things and the scenery even here in Sri Lanka." He loves the culture, the traditions he gets to enjoy when he visits places. "England is nice and cosy, it's got a personality of its own," he adds.

Physical Science: Studying the subject at University, he shows great interest in the three subjects that fall into this course of study; chemistry, physics and biology. "I did maths for my A/Ls and really liked chemistry and physics," he said, therefore he decided to continue this line in his higher studies.

Outdoor activities: Adventure sports figure high on his list of favourite pastimes. "I love white water rafting," he says. Having gone twice, he also had quite an experience when his raft toppled and he lost his oar. "Everyone else managed to stay on board while I was thrown out." Even though he loves adventure, he says he would never go bungee jumping as that is a bit out of his league.

Music: Owner of a huge CD collection, he likes alternate music. Like most people, he confesses to having gone through the phase of changing his tastes. When he was younger, Jehan liked the Backstreet Boys but along with half of Sri Lanka, grew out of them. "I now like music by groups like R.E.M," he says adding that unfortunately this type of music does not have much of an audience locally.
