Mirroring
a different tune
"This
may be the last I look upon you.
Or the last I live under your shade,
But learn from those who went before you,
And leave untouched what they forbade."
Insightful
words from young writer Sonalini Gunasekera, an 18-year-old who
has recently published her first works of poetry and prose. A former
student of Colombo International School, Sonalini will be attending
Oxford University to read Law in October.
The book of
prose is called 'Kadapatha', as it mirrors her thoughts and experiences.
Sonalini has a unique style of narration, which makes Kadapatha
enjoyable reading. It pays homage to Sri Lankan influences that
range from national heritage sights to old buildings and a forgotten
generation of people who formed the country's colonial past.
'Music from
another room', is the book of poems in this dual publication. It
consists of lyrics covering several themes ranging from ambiguity
and destiny to reconciliation.
Both books
are in aid of charity, with the revenue channelled to the children's
ward of the Cancer Hospital and to buying books for libraries devastated
by recent flooding. Both books will be sold together at the Cargills
outlet at Braybrooke Street, at Odel Unlimited and at the C. G.
Associates Bookshop at tha British Council.
Eastern
grandeur
Pakistani
fashion designer Nazneen Tariq is all set to dazzle Colombo audiences
at 'Silhouettes', a grand fashion show presented at the Colombo
Plaza Hotel, on June 29. She was flown down by courtesy of SriLankan
Airlines and the Lions Club of Colombo (Host).
Nazneen has
successfully exhibited in America, Canada, Nairobi, Bangladesh,
Singapore and the Far East. This is her first excursion into Colombo's
fashion world. Her designs are a fusion of western lines blended
with traditional styles in soft satins, gossamer silks and fine
cottons.
The show itself
promises to be a visually exciting evening of fashion and entertainment
combining local as well as Pakistani models, with choreography,
hair and make up by Nushara Fernando Atapattu and Lou Ching Wong.
