Ananda
outclass Dharmaraja
Ananda 20, Dharmaraja 0
Ananda, who had the better of the exchanges overall, beat Dharmaraja
by 20 points (2 goals, 2 penalties) to nil at the Bogambara stadium
yesterday. Dharmaraja had their moments, especially in the first
half, when they pressurised the Ananda defense with a series of
five yard scrums and penalties. However the stout defence put up
by Ananda nullified these efforts.
After the Rajan
full back had missed an early penalty, Ananda's fly half Nipuna
Vimukthi put them ahead 3/0. In the 22nd minute, centre Ishan Lakjaya
split the Rajan defence with a good run. His pass was collected
by winger Chamara Chaturanga who scored. Vimukthi converted and
also put over a penalty for a half-time score of 13-0.
There was no
scoring in the second half to fill the dying minutes of the game
when winger Dayan Dhanushka went over, Vimukthi obliged once more.
Some Rajan forwards were sometimes short of ideas with the ball
in hand and the line not all that far away. -A.K.

Davis
Cup Asia/Oceanic Group IV
Vietnam and Myanmar upset the apple-cart
By M. Shamil Amit
With rain ruling the roost it did not prevent unseeded Vietnam and
Myanmar to provide the shocks in the Davis Cup Asia/Oceanic Group
IV tennis tournament when they qualified to book a place for promtion
to Group III along with two other teams Saudi Arabia and Oman. The
tournament being played at the SLTA tennis courts in Greenpath.
Top seeded
Sri Lanka and bottom seeded Singapore were eliminated at the conclusion
of day three. Sri Lanka's hopes were dashed when they lost to Vietnam
2/1 on the first day and then were beaten by Saudi Arabia 2-0. While
Singapore lost to Myanmar 2-1 and then to Oman by the same margin.
The performance
of Vietnam and Myanmar were something special as Veitnam was playing
in a Davis Cup after a lapse of 25 years and Myanmar were competing
after nearly four decades. But Sri Lanka gained a consolation win
when they defeated Brunei 3-0 which ofcourse had no effect at all.
The pick of
the players was no doubt Vietnams Do Minh Quan who defeated both
the Sri Lanka players on day one within a space of a few hours.
In the first game he defeated Rohan de Silva convincingly 6/0, 6/0
but was defaulted by the ITF referee as he was the first seeded
player and Roha was Sri Lanka's second seeded player but he came
back again to beat Sri Lanka's first seeded Rajiv Rajapakse 7/6,
6/4.
The tournament
which was played in the clay court is now being played in hard court
which the organisers say is allowed if any occurrence like the rain
takes place. Due to heavy rain overnight the orgaizers were compelled
to delay the start of the games between Vietnam vs Myanmar and Saudi
Arabia vs Oman which only got underway at 4.00 p.m from the scheduled
9.00 a.m.
An official
quoted that if they had to play even till midnight they will be
compelled to do so as it cannot be put off for another day. At the
time of going to press the Vietnam had taken a 1-0 lead over Myanmar
with Le Quoc Khanh having dropped the first set staged a stout hearted
fight back to defeat Mynamar's Khin Muang Win 3/6, 6/3, 6/2 in a
140 minute battle.
In the other
singles match between Saudi Arabia and Oman has taken a set each.
With the eight nation event scheduled to end today the organizers
were determined to complete the fourth days matches under any circumstances.
Owing to unavailability
of suitable courts all the consolation round matches to decide the
fifth to the eighth positions were put off for today starting from
9.00 a.m. Sri Lanka will play Singapore and Bangladesh and if they
win both it will earn them the fifth place. In playoff from promotions
Vietnam will meet Oman and Saudi Arabia will play Myanmar.
Meanwhile the
Group II tie between Hong Kong and Lebanon is being held concurrently.
Hong Kong took a 2-1 lead with Wayne Wong winning the second singles
match overcoming Karim Alayli 1/6, 6/1, 7/5, 6/3 after his compatriot
Hiu Tung YU was forced to concede a walk over to Patrick Chucri
in the fourth set owing to heat exhaustion. Chucri won 6/2, 1/6,
6/4, 3/0 (walkover). While Brian Hung and Ling Liu defeated Karim
Alayli and Patrick Chucri 6/1, 6/3, 6/4.
