Havies
dominate but CH win
CH 20, Havelocks 15
By Bernie Wijesekera
Havelocks SC led 15-0 at the half came back with a sterling second
half rally to lose by 20 pts. (four tries) to 15 (three tries) in
a hard fought Caltex 'A' league match played at Maitland Cresent
last evening.
The Park Club
had to blame for themselves for this defeat when they gifted three
tries due to their poor ball handling and thinking. CH in their
earlier game against Kandy suffered a humiliating defeat at Nittawela,
while the Havies turned tables on the Army to win in a rousing contest.
CH with their
image tarnished despite a young and hardy pack, fought well in this
match. Their forward driving and mauling and had the Havies defence
in a dither.
But the Park
was no let up. Centre Joseph Waka playing an intelligent game had
the threes in motion. In the seventh minute they could have scored
but for an aweful pass lost them a certain try inches from the CH
line.
In the 11th
minute Havies, fullback Lalinda Rodrigo fumbled with the ball in
defence. Taranga Jayakody cut loose to pick the ball and fall over
for an unconverted try. Havies had much possession, but it was their
but poor ball handling which cost them dearly. CH kept on penetrating.
But the Havies
held back thanks to Waka, who was a tower of strength in defence.
CH penetrated the Havies defence to score their second try thorough
prop Malinda Hetiarachchi who ran over for an unconverted try. Just
before the short whisltyle Uganthara Karunaratne scythed his way
for a corner flag try 15-0 at the half.
After interval
Havies dominated play and played cohesive rugby. They displayed
better skills to score three tries through winger Jayason Jayasekera,
Lakala Perera and Centre Joseph Waka. All three tries went unconverted.
CH could add only five points to their tally - a try by Fijian Centre
Jimmy. Referee - Dilroy Fernndo -BW
Army

Army - 20 CR & FC - 10
By Shamseer Jaleel
Army Sports Club powered their way through to beat CR & FC by
20 points (2 Goals, 2 Penalties) to 10 (1 Goal, 1 Penalty) in a
Caltex "A" Division match played at Galle Face yesterday.
Army played
excellent rugby supported by their Kenyan Centre Edwin Shimaga,
Kapila Knowton and their Wingers Fernando brothers Sithara and Prakum.
CR have to be blamed themselves with Asanga Rodrigo gifted one try
as he took too easy in covering defence.
There were a
number of mistakes by the referee. Most of the time Army line was
off side. CR & FC replaced and brought in Zulki Hameed only
late in the 2nd half.
He played a good game with his quick moves.
CR & FC
opened scoring first when Roshan Pieiris fired across a panalty.
Soon afer this T.A. Silva of Army took the solidiers into a lead
with 2 spot kicks. At half time Army led 6-3.
In the second
half Asanga Rodrigo fumbled as Prakum Fernando touched, down and
T. A. Silva converted. CR & FC fought back, through a five meter
scrum skipper Shamly Nawaz scored which was goaled by Roshan Pieiris.
Later in injury
time Naufer Rahim touched down and T.A. Silva converted, to give
the Army a well earned victory by 20 points to 10 points. Army's
safe full back T.A. Silva contributed half of their teams score.
It was a good
victory for the soldiers after last weekned's loss to Havies.
