Climbing
the heights of success
A successful
dive is all about entering the water with the minimum of fuss -
no splash, perhaps just a few ripples. This Sunday's TV Times cover
girl, Harini epitomizes this feature in her personality and style
- The No Nonsense Achiever.
Harini
began her sporting life as a gymnast at the tender age of seven.
Then, there was the Inter House Swimming meet at Visakha Vidyalaya.
TheSwimming Captain persuaded her to enter. She did, but only for
the fun of it. Her love affair with the water had begun. A few months
later, during swimming training at the Otters Pool, she watched
with wonder, whilst a few divers went through their paces. Her gymnast
background and her love for the water.... Harini was hooked.
From that point
on, there was no looking back. She describes her most memorable
moment as, when at the tender age of eleven, she won her first international
medal in India. She has since won eight international medals in
geographical places as diverse as India. Korea, Chinese Taipei,
China, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Thailand plus numerous diplomas for
swimming and diving. She participated in the Junior World Games
in Malaysia at the age 15 and at the Asian Games in Bangkok the
following year. She was nominated as the Up and coming Sports Woman
of the Year in 2001 and awarded double colours for diving and swimming
by the Sri Lanka Schools Association. She was the swimming Captain
of Visakha Vidyalaya.
What has diving
given her? "Self-Confidence, Courage and Independence' she
replies with scarcely a thought. Her guiding lights are her parents,
her coach and that very special someone, who have all contributed
equally. When asked about the future plans - (with a laugh) 'Oh
to get married and maybe nurture a few tiny divers". Then more
seriously "I'd like to pursue my marketing career."
Any advice to youngsters "Yes, plenty. Right now diving in
Sri Lanka has hit a low.
There aren't
many, who are coming into this sport. So, make inquiries, join in,
the sport needs you like never before." Any role models? deep
thought and "Yes, Serena Williams" Embarrassing Moments:
"when I need to wear cut-away swim gear in front of large crowds"
This is a young
and beautiful lady, who hurtles through the air, turns on her head
more than a few times and then finishes it all with grace and elegance...
and most importantly, at other times, has her feet planted firmly
on the ground.

Remembering Muttusamy Master
The 15th death anniversary of one of Sri Lanka's finest
musicians- R. Muttusamy master - falls on Friday, June 27.
The extremely
talented Indian-born musician who contributed immensely towards
Sri Lanka's music, especially in the film arena, composed scores
for more than 225 Sinhala and Tamil films since he made his debut
in 1947 as an Assistant Music Director in the country's first film
- Kadawunu Poronduwa.
Born on January
5, 1926 as the only son of versatile Malayalee musician Ramaya Baghwather,
Muttuamy master, as he was fondly known, had practiced on a baby
violin as a kid and mastered the instrument when he was just10.
Having joined
the Radio Ceylon's Tamil Orchestra on October 20, 1952 he was later
in charge of Sundera Murugan Studios ( Now, SPM Studio, Kandana)
where he met film producer and Cinemas boss K. Gunaratnam who entrusted
him with the task of providing melodious tunes to his films.
As a music
director Muttusamy master made his mark with Prema Tharangaya and
from thereon dished out sweet stuff through hundreds of films. Apart
from being a Carnatic music teacher, the master tunesmith also rendered
his voice in several Sinhala films.
On the family
front, Muttusamy master married Neeliya Perera in October 1961 and
was the father of Mohanraj, Chitrangi, Prasanna Vadhani and Keerthika.
His only son
- Apsaras group leader and vocalist Mohanraj, who follows his father's
footsteps told the TV Times that this year the family was planning
to mark the 15th death anniversary of Muttusamy master on a simple
note.
