Youth
alive
Personalized was the keynote at the ‘Youth Live’ concert
held last Saturday at the Methodist College auditorium, with lots
of youthful exuberance added on.
Three of the
bands that performed at the concert have already made it big in
the Sri Lanka Rock scene while two other bands made their debut
that day. Except for a few hitches in the lights and sounds department
the concert went off well.
First on stage
were Ruach, a new group who performed a number of hit Gospel songs,
including two of their own compositions ‘Go Down’ and
‘Out of the Depths’. The lead guitarist enthralled the
audience with his solos.
‘Redeemer’
and ‘Take Me Away’ proved to be an ideal combination
for the second band, Mute. Their original number for the evening,
‘Sinner’ got an enthusiastic response and many calls
for an encore.
Next it was
High Octane, the winners of the coveted TNL Onstage trophy, the
finals of which were held a few weeks ago. Their rendition of ‘Running
Away’ by Noobastank, ‘Shine’ by Collective Soul
and ‘Don’t stop Dancing’ by Creed succeeded in
generating much excitement among the crowd. Their next number, an
original titled ‘Darkness’ was a hit.
The professionalism
of High Octane throughout their performance gave an inkling of what
the Sri Lankan band scene can expect in the next few years. Reap
came on next, with this young bunch of musicians proving their mettle
with ‘Spin’ followed by ‘Kryptonite’. Their
Gospel list began with ‘King of Majesty’ and concluded
with ‘In the Secret’.
Ezra needed
no introduction and their hour-long performance had the audience
on its feet with ‘King of Kings’, ‘Trading My
Sorrow’ and ‘Amazing Grace’ and their originals
‘Nazarene’, ‘Are You Ready’ and ‘Dveshaya’.
Youth Live which
is to be made an annual event, was organized by the Kollupitiya
Methodist Church Youth Fellowship to give aspiring young musicians
a place in the sun. The event was sponsored by Sun FM, Gold FM and
The Sunday Times. (RHG)
