Odds
and Ends
Politicians
are spoilers
Politicians were the notable absentees at the popular film awards
held in Colombo last week.
The few of the
breed who were visible were either movie stars or producers turned
politicians but none of the purebred were among the invitees as
is usually the case. The announcers at the show couldn't help noting
the wonderful difference their absence was making to the show. "See
how smoothly things are progressing without the presence of politicians",
one of them quipped. Most of the artistes seemed to agree.
Separation
not divorce
Now that the prolonged talks between the PA and the JVP having finally
collapsed, some among the PA still seem to find it difficult to
let go of their red brethren. "It is only a separation, not
a divorce", a leading PA member who strongly supported an alliance
between the two parties was heard saying.
Japanese style
patience
A fight of sorts nearly ensued among some reporters, in their over
enthusiasm to grab copies of a press release that a media officer
of Japan's special envoy Yashushi Akashi was trying to distribute
just before Mr. Akashi was to commence an informal media briefing.
A few quick hands grabbed the release from a startled media man
and Mr. Akashi who was just behind him appeared taken aback by all
the fuss.
There was no
such problem for the journalists who were each handed a copy of
the release as they left the briefing. Maybe along with the Japanese
aid, what we also need is more of Japanese style patience. |
