A very promising talent search
By Aaysha Cader
Talent Search 2003 is set to go on stage on November 29 at the Navarangahala Hall at Royal College, Colombo. Also known as the ‘Interact Grammys’, the event is co-organized by the Interact Clubs of Royal College and St. Bridget’s Convent for the fourth successive year.

Talent Search brings together youth from all parts of the island to compete in categories as diverse as solo, group, rap, dance and instrumental (acoustic and non-acoustic), in addition to the new category for Bands. Organized under the theme of ‘Creating an opportunity for talent to unveil itself’ the contest has seen the completion of its semi-final rounds in Colombo and Kandy.

As part of the innovations introduced to the contest and due to the large numbers of participants, the committee had also decided to hold the dance category in two different sections, one for traditional and the other for modern dance. Says Oshadini, 16, co-project chairperson “We wanted to stick with our theme of creating opportunities to display talent, and it was only fair to allow more room for participation this way.”

The winners of the rap and traditional dance category have already been judged and will perform at the final. The top three performers from the other categories will battle it out for the top slot, with four performances vying for the award for the best group vocal. In addition, there is also a special award for the most talented artiste. The new addition to this year’s line-up, the band category has already proved exceedingly popular, drawing the largest number of entries.

The curtain raiser to the event will feature a fusion dance performed by dancers from the school scene. Guest performances of solo singing are also on the cards at the final. The preliminary rounds of the contest were judged by popular personalities in the local music scene including Robert of Cold Fusion and Anil of Independent Square.

Being on the TS committee has been an experience of a lifetime for its members. Over the years, Talent Search has been a stepping-stone to the success of many local stars including Bathiya and Santhush and the Creators. This year’s event is sponsored by the Academy of Business Studies, and co-sponsored by Sri Lankan Airlines, Sperrys, BrylCreem, Ceylon Cold Stores, Keells and the Academy of Digital Arts. The Sunday Times is the print media sponsor.

With months of hard work, Talent Search 2003 is set to take Colombo by storm. So you might just want to head to the Navarangahala on the 29th, ‘cause you don’t want to be missing the first gig of a future star! Tickets are available at the Royal College Union and the Interact Clubs of Royal College and St. Bridget’s Convent.
