A crucial SLFP central committee meeting is to be held tomorrow
to finalise the decision on forming an alliance with the JVP.
But sources within the JVP told The Sunday Times that the
JVP was concerned about the talks between the SLFP and the
UNF and had decided not to take part in a national government.

works out budget strategy for 3 ministries
President Chandrika Kumaratunga is planning to amalgamate
the Defence and Interior Ministries and offer the Deputy Minister
positions of the Defence and Mass Communication to the UNF
as a compromise to avoid a situation of the Minister not being
present in Parliament during the Committee stage when the
votes of the respective ministries are taken up for debate,
political sources said.

Four top officials appointed by President Chandrika Kumaratunga
and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe are working out a
consensus on the defence, the peace process, the economy and
‘good governance’ informed sources said.

President is using contradictory game plans-JVP
The JVP strongly warned President Chandrika Kumaratunga yesterday
that any alliance or consensus with the UNF government would
pave the way for the setting up of a separate state by the
LTTE.
