goes down fighting
National boxer U. Bandara fighting in the feather weight class,
in the quarter-finals had to use his experience and ring-craft to
get the better of schoolboy K. Sameera, which highlighted at the
78th Boxing nationals staged at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium,
yesterday.
Sameera just
out of school showed promise fought a gruelling four round contest
against the experienced opponent. In the light fly weight category
there was a keen contest between Harsha Kumara and S. Lakmal, the
former won the fight with his experince.
In the lower
weights that the boxers impressed. In the past, too Sri Lanka boxers
like 'King' P.G. Karunaratne from the Army who won a 'gold' in the
S.E. Asian Boxing Championship staged here.
It was a brain
child of doyen of Sri Lanka boxing, old Roayalist Eddie Gray. Incidentally
'Karu' died under tragic circumstances in Jaffna (run over by an
Army vehicle). His son Uganthara now plays for CH and FC (first
XV rugby) as a hard running winger.
Slimline team
leads the team championship. Close on their heels are the Sri Lanka
Army and the Air Force. The finals, will be worked off today at
the same venue and some close contests are on the cards in the lower
weight categories and will be a treat for the avid boxing fans.
The most scientific
boxer will receive the Sir Henry Manning Trophy. Mr. Tony Cooper,
Country Manager, East Asia, Mast. Industries (USA) will be the chief
guest and give away the awards.
