Taking
the fight from province to province
In a bid to curb human rights violations, The Human Rights Commission
has laucnhed a ‘see for themselves’ fact-finding mission
in all provinces beginning with the East.
Dr. Radhika
Coomaraswamy, chairperson of the Human Rights Commission said they
started off with the East because of its complex nature. She said
they were looking into three areas, allegations against the security
forces, against the LTTE and the social and economic rights of the
IDP's. Commenting on the visit to the East she said she held frank
discussions with the SLMM, security forces and the Police.
Commenting
on steps that have been taken so far she said that regional committees
would be given more authority to handle human rights issues. She
also said the biggest hurdle the Commission faced was shortage of
funds and staff. |
