One of the official vehicles used by the world's first woman Prime
Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike was auctioned on Saturday at the
Prime Minister's office. The white Volvo brought down to Sri Lanka
in 1993, and used by the former Prime Minister from 1994 until her
demise in 2000 was auctioned for Rs. 650,000.
The car was
bought by Krishantha Gunasekera, a businessmen from Wadduwa.
The new owner told The Sunday Times that he had always admired Mrs.
Bandaranaike and had a lot of respect for her.
"I also
worked for President Chandrika Kumaratunga in 1994. “I bought
this car to present it to my brother. This way I will be able to
keep it in the family,” Mr. Gunasekera said. |
