A soldier recently was sentenced to one year's rigorous imprisonment
by the Court of Appeal for defaulting to pay a fine previously imposed
by court, on his having been convicted for the abduction of two
men.
Justice P.
Wijeratne sentenced Private A.A. Lionel Mithraratne, to one year's
RI when he told court that he was unable to pay the fine of Rs.
200,000 imposed upon him previously by court.
Private Mithraratne
was fined consequent to being convicted for the abduction of one
Sarath Kumara and A.A. Kularatne, brother and husband respectively
of the petitioner Prema Navaratne Menike of Kuruwita.
The petitioner
went to court alleging that her brother and husband had been abducted
by a gang of armed persons in October 1989 during the insurrection.
The soldier, also a relative of the woman, was found guilty of abducting
the two men, due to personal animosity arising out of a land dispute.
