Warm
hearts bring light to their lives
By Priyanwada Ranawaka
The
one- room shack is no more filled with gloom. Seated on his brand
new wheelchair, K.A.Piyasena expresses his happiness in a warm smile.
No more tears to fight back.
A smile, a
kind word, an attentive ear or an act of caring, all have the potential
to turn a life around. And it is wonderfully heartening to know
that there are so many caring people who reach out to those in need.
The Sunday Times would like to thank all the readers who responded
to our story titled "Hanging by a thread" on the plight
of this elderly couple, published in the Plus of November 30. Mr.
Piyasena's needs have been answered.
His wife Mrs.
Charlotte Wickremasinghe has also received a wheelchair from a generous
benefactor. "We have visitors almost every day, who inquire
about our needs and help us in our difficulties," says Charlotte.
"We are
thankful to everyone who came here and talked to us," says
Mr. Piyasena adding that they have received many 'gifts', from provisions
to new clothes and even a new gas cooker. One bighearted benefactor
has even paid the rent for their room for an entire year.
Life may still
be difficult, given their health problems, but the couple have been
deeply touched by the kindness shown to them.
