Sangeetha turns film producer
By Ramesh Uvais
Exactly a year ago, we announced the good news about the marriage of popular film star Sangeetha Weeraratne and as Sangeetha and Roshantha celebrated their first wedding anniversary last week, she gave us more good news. And this time it’s about a new film she would be soon producing for the first time.

The yet untitled film based on a true story would be directed by award winning film director Wasantha Obeysekara, Sangeetha told the TV Times. With a star cast comprising herself, Ravindra Randeniya, Kamal Addararachchi, Dayan Witharana and Chandanie Seneviratne, Rohana Weerasinghe would handle the film’s music scores.

At a time when producers are turning away from film production due to the apparent crisis in the Sinhala cinema, didn’t you think you were taking a risk by pumping your money into this film project?

“No, being in the film industry for more than 13 years, I am confident that good films will always be well received by the audience. Since, I was particularly moved by the basic storyline, I have faith that Wasantha and our team would do justice to it,” a beaming Sangeetha said.

“Our shooting sessions will start on January 5 in locations around Nuwara Eliya and later in Colombo,” Sangeetha said. Sangeetha Weeraratne who possesses that extra-ordinary ability to leap right out of the screen straight into the hearts of the people, believes that hardwork, commitment and loyalty combined with looks and talent are the key ingredients for her so-far achieved success.

In her showbiz career, Sangeetha has achieved what most would take a lifetime, endorsing her acting talents in more than 50 films including creations like Saptha Kanya, Aswesuma, Maruthaya, Dorakada Marawa, Nomiyena Minisun, Kinihiriya Mal, Dawal Migel Re Deniel,Salelu Warama and Bahubarya.
Having worked with more than 35 renowned directors, Sangeetha has successfully portrayed heavy roles as well as the so-called light ones in several box-office hits and has bagged almost all prestigious awards including the Presidential, OCIC and Swarna Sanka.

The charming old girl of Methodist College, Colombo who made her debut with ‘It’s a matter of time’ as a 16-year-old in 1990, is certainly no stranger to the film world. Her father Timothy Weeraratne is a well known film director who owns the popular Timothy Studios Group. When he made the film ‘Sangeetha’ in 1975, he little guessed that his daughter would zoom into the silver screen’s top bracket with the advance of time.

Asked how she felt about her large fan-following, Sangeetha said flashing her usual dimplish smile, “Oh, that’s a wonderful feeling that cannot be described in words. I love my fans and I know my popularity depends on them. I love talking, smiling and signing autographs when I meet people. That has become a way of life for me and I treasure those moments.”
