Lanka
campaigns for UN post
Sri Lanka kicked off its campaign for the candidature for
the UN-Secretary General post last week, telling diplomats to lobby
in their respective countries.
The campaign
got underway when the candidate, Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando
himself, told diplomats Sri Lanka was seeking support from their
governments. After meeting foreign diplomats in Colombo, the foreign
Minister told Sri Lanka's envoys abroad to do likewise.
Minister Fernando
told The Sunday Times that the meeting was taken as preliminary
action to drum up international support for the UN place, as he
strongly felt that an early preparation was required.
Mr. Fernando
said he told the foreign diplomats his candidature was not an ego
trip but more a bid for an Asian to get the top UN post. Mr. Fernando
said most countries were looking for a candidate who would be just
and balanced in handling world affairs and he was confident Sri
Lanka could meet that need. |
