A hitherto undisclosed swearing-in ceremony of President Chandrika
Bandaranaike Kumaratunga on November 11, 2000, by Chief Justice
Sarath N. de Silva will enable her to remain in office until
the same date in 2006.
British
mission delaying Mangala's visa
The British High Commission has delayed issuing a visa to
SLFP parliamentarian Mangala Samaraweera sparking speculation
on the pending case filed in the Supreme Court by the MP against
the UK fingerprinting system introduced at the High Commission.
JVP
gives deadline to SLFP
The JVP has accused the SLFP of adopting a "delaying
tactic" by holding talks with the UNP and given another
ultimatum, that of January 2004, for the SLFP to strike an
alliance with the JVP.

crisis takes a holiday
A lull in the political set up is due to prevail during the
festive season with the Mano Tittawella (PA)-Malik Samarawickrama
(UNP) committee coming to a standstill as both officials are
overseas.
Sweeping
electoral reforms on the cards
The Parliament Select Committee on Electoral Reforms has reached
a consensus on reintroducing ward system for local councils.
The committee, which held 12 sittings, is due to hand over
a preliminary report before the deadline of January 31 and
is likely to ask for more time to present the full report,
an official said.
