The
stalemate in the Sri Lankan peace process
Political observers feel that the failure on the part of the President
and the Prime Minister is the cause for the stalemate in the peace
talks. The government is putting the blame on the President, saying
she is moving cards with vested political interests.
Sudaroli column Dec 21
While the Prime
Minister is prepared to face any political eventuality and the SLFP
and the JVP are to arrive at an election pact, the LTTE has advised
the TNA to get ready to face an election. Yet, all depend on the
decision that is to be taken by the President. For how long could
the government proceed without a consensus being arrived at between
the President and the Prime Minister and keep the peace talks suspended?
Thinamurasu column Dec 21
As per the
constitution, the subject of defence has been entrusted with the
President. Therefore it would be sensible to incorporate the President
also and carry forward the peace programme, particularly at a time
when the international community is adding pressure.
Navamani - column Dec 21
Peace efforts
have derailed and all hopes of the people for a consensus between
the President and the Prime Minister have ended in smoke.
On the whole, not only the peace talks, peace itself has gone dry.
It all began with the National Lotteries Board and ended with the
takeover of the Defence Ministry by the President. The very President
who disputed all efforts for consensus and peace moves must come
forward to rescue the situation.
