Check your gift list and hit the malls
By Marisa de Silva & Ishani Ranasinghe
Shopping… we all have a love and hate relationship with it. Love to shop for ourselves but when it comes to others…where do we even start?

This Christmas we thought we'll make your task a whole lot easier. Exploring the world of malls, arcades, plazas and little shops in Colombo (you name it, we've been there), we picked the best for you. So, here's your guide to some seasonal shopping. Happy shopping everyone!!!

They say diamonds are forever but now even flowers can be, because you've got the 'Second Chance Flower Shop' at the Crescat Market, where flowers are for keeps. Why? Because they're all artificial. Roses, tulips, poinsettias, lilies, they're always in season.

Still at the Crescat Market and also at Majestic City is… Pro Sound, the one stop shop for all you can watch, listen to and 'virtually' play. If it's DVDs, VCDs, CDs or Play Station games you're looking for, search no more. Reasonably priced, their collection ranges from Hindi movies to live concerts of your favourite rock bands and much loved TV sitcoms.

'Gosh'; what a store! If accessories are what you're into then pop into Gosh at Crescat (upper floor) for chains, jewelled crab claws (not real!), tinted hair extensions, tiaras, scarves, hand bags and wigs.

If you're looking for ordinary stuff that looks extra-ordinary, 'Beyond Basix' may be able to help you. With their variety of funky lamps and vases, tinted glassware, smiley face radios, shawls cum belts … a gift out of the ordinary can be found here. Beyond Basix is at Crescat, Majestic City, Millenium Park and Duplication Road, Colombo 3.

Guys, finally an entire floor dedicated to the best leather has to offer. The new, expanded Leather Collection on Flower Road offers quality shoes, wallets, belts, briefcases and backpacks for men and colourful handbags, hats, shawls and shoes for women.

Who says jewellery's only for women? At Ridhi Silver Studio down Guildford Crescent (next to the Lionel Wendt) you'd be pleasantly surprised at the 'men's collection' available. Cuff links, tiepins, rings, bracelets and chains of varied thickness could just delight your loved one this Christmas. But, don't be disheartened ladies, the most exquisite range of jewellery awaits you.

Bellucci is an ornamental paradise where Disney characters, ancient Ceylonese figurines, the Holy Family, the entire nativity scene and even good ole' Santa are awaiting a place on your mantelpiece this Christmas. Crafted with intricate detail, these ornaments are the ideal gift this season. Clothes, lamps, wrought iron candle stands, costume jewellery etc. can also be bought at their outlet on Horton Place.

Silk Road (within the Bellucci Mall) offers ready made, 100% silk clothes, ties and handbags of all shapes and sizes. Orders are also taken to custom make handbags and clothes.

Personalised stoneware pottery mugs from The Pottery Shop at Majestic City, will make a novel and intimate gift for someone this Christmas. Your love can literally be carved in stone as customized inscriptions and even fun or unique designs can be ordered. Vases, dinner and tea sets and bowls etc can also be found at this shop and the best part of it all is that it's oven and microwave proof.

'Shilpi' at Majestic City has the look of Dicken's 'Old Curiosity Shop', with the dim lighting from its coloured cotton paper and fabric lamps giving the shop a cosy atmosphere. All Indian Tantra T-Shirts too are available at this store as well as handmade and painted wall hangings and cushion covers, bon-bons, 100% cotton sarongs and candle stands.

Rich and Famous (Majestic City and Crescat) offers attire and accessories from blouses, to pants to dresses, skirts, belts, handbags and shoes, all waiting to be mixed and matched to suit your taste. Naysons at Majestic City has handmade picture frames and the unique gift of a framed picture, with a special sheen that brings the picture to life. An out of the ordinary gift for someone special this Christmas.
