Ranweli's
eco-tourism effort wins global recognition
Ranweli Holiday Village won the runner-up award as a "Highly
Commended" venture in the "Environmental Experience"
category at the British Airways Tourism for Tomorrow Awards 2003.
The resort
won this award, beating 75 entries from 38 countries, for its hard
work and dedication in creating a unique concept in sustainable
tourism. The winning concept had to attract up-market tourists looking
for resorts with cultural and environmental sensitivity with an
educational experience and also create an environment that benefits
the local community, protects natural and cultural heritage, minimises
energy and water use, educates local people and visitors and contributes
towards a better life for future generations - the essence of sustainable
development.
Awards are presented
in six categories covering a whole range of tourism projects which
will serve as models for the future, integrating environmental management
with all operations of the tourism facility.
Ranweli is located
on the west coast of Sri Lanka in a 22-acre peninsula with a forested
environment. The hotel with 72 bungalows and 12 family rooms is
modelled on a traditional Sri Lankan village and constructed using
traditional methods and locally sourced, biodegradable material.
Qualified trained
interpreters provide professional eco-tourism programmes in nature,
culture and soft adventure in a pollution-free scenic environment.
The British Airways Tourism for Tomorrow competition aims to raise
awareness of the world's role models for responsible tourism and
is judged by a global panel chaired by Professor David Bellamy and
including environmental and conservation experts.
Ranweli founder
director Chandra de Silva, who was responsible for transforming
sea, sun and sand-mass tourism into authentic eco-tourism, was invited
to the awards ceremony held on December 2 at the British Airways
Headquarters in Britain to receive the award from British Airways
Chairman Lord Marshall and Professor David Bellamy.
