‘Sasandara’: Intrigues of a Kapuwa
‘Sasandara’ on the Swarnavahini drama list narrates tale of two businessmen and what happens in families. It has an able cast including Kanchana Mendis, Kanchana Kodituwakku, Manel Jayasena, Sujani Menaka, Nihal Fernando and Avanthi Aponso.

Samson Kodippili (Sam) and Edwin Morahella (Eddie) started life as labourers, but today they are two very successful and rich businessmen in society. Their past has been kept a secret known only to both of them. Eddie’s only son Panduka completing his higher education in Australia arrives in Sri Lanka.

Sam’s only daughter Natalia is a girl with radical ideas. She looks at life realistically and she criticises the false values in her parents’ lifestyle. Sam and his wife believe that the only way to change Natalia’s realistic attitude is to get her married to Eddie’s son Panduka who is a very soft spoken intelligent boy. Although Eddie approves of this proposal his wife Sarojini strongly objects. Panduka being obedient and loyal to his mother rejects the proposal.

Samson is disgusted and angered by this. He is affected socially and religiously. In the meantime Eddie’s family with the help of a matchmaker receives a proposal. The prospective bride is Sasandara, a beautiful girl from the Pinnawala Walawwa in Kandy. Panduka and Sasandara develop a relationship which ends in a love affair. Finally they get engaged with the blessings of everyone. Sasandara’s father known as Pinnawala Hamu had met Panduka’s father Eddie in a slum area in Nawala. One day when questioned by Eddie, Pinnawala Hamu confesses that he actually is not Pinnawala Hamu and is not from a Walawwa and that his name is Samare. He says that both he and Sasandara became part of this conspiracy hatched by the matchmaker.

He also says that he was adequately paid by the matchmaker for this.
Eddie’s family and their close relationship are humiliated and disgraced by this. However, Panduka is not shaken by this and decides to find Sasandara and to find out the truth. At this stage Eddie’s friend Sam proposes that the best way to get out of this is to stop Panduka going in search of Sasandara and he re-proposes their daughter Natalia to Panduka.

Eddie and his wife under immense pressure welcome Sam’s proposal. While the parents try to finalise this marriage Panduka gets married to Sasandara in secret. Natalia is the one who helps Panduka in his marriage to Sasandara.

Panduka quietly leaves for Australia with Sasandara. Eddie somehow finds the matchmaker and beats him up making him reveal the truth and demands that he take him to the person behind the conspiracy.
