In
Saddam’s defence
More than 40 Sri Lankan lawyers have come forward to defend former
Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, if he is tried in an international
court of justice for the alleged crimes committed by him.
TELO
leader, N. Srikantha who is co-ordinating the effort told The Sunday
Times that the lawyers who have given their consent will be meeting
next Saturday in Colombo to discuss the modalities on how they would
defend the former Iraqi leader.
He
said that lawyers from various parts of the country including some
prominent lawyers were among those who had come forward to appear
on behalf of the former Iraqi leader.
He
said they were expecting that they would have more support over
the next few days for the move. Mr. Srikantha said it would be a
voluntary exercise and they plan to appear on behalf of the former
leader free of charge. |
