LTTE
announces tax cuts to slash prices

The LTTE has launched a new wing to undertake planning and development
in areas under its control and announced tax cuts on essential items.
The wing known as the Planning and Development Secretariat will
work out policy guidelines for development activities in the region,
LTTE sources said. The organisation is seen as a body to replace
the now defunct Secretariat for Immediate Humanitarian and Rehabilitation
Needs (SIHRN).
LTTE
political wing leader S.P. Thamilselvan presided over the inaugural
meeting and was assisted by Thuyavan, Director of Planning and Development
who has been appointed to head the body.
The
LTTE has decided to slash taxes on fishing gear, agricultural items
and equipment needed for small scale industries. Taxes are completely
removed on fertilizer, insecticides, pesticides, ice, mineral water,
nutrition food, medicines, medical equipment, Ata flour, cooking
oil, infant food, sterilised milk, all vegetables, stationery and
books.
The
tax on clothing has been reduced by 5% from the previous 15%, soap
and powder tax has been reduced by 2%. The 20% tax on cement has
been removed and a standard tax of Rs. 50 will be charged for a
50 kg bag. The tax on sand, metal, timber and logs have been removed. |
