President
calls on professionals to help run country
By Nalaka Nonis
President Chandrika Kumaratunga yesterday said that professionals
in the country should be actively involved in managing the affairs
in the country because the Government lacks efficient people to
direct the country.
She
made these remarks at the induction ceremony of the 19th President
of the Sri Lanka College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists held
at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute. The President said that the
country is losing quality professionals due to the brain drain triggered
by economic and other reasons. She said she does not mind some of
the professionals replacing parliamentarians as the country lacks
good politicians.
"Politicians
in Sri Lanka have failed to realise the desires and aspirations
of the people who vote them into power. Therefore the country needs
professionals to play a bigger role in taking the country forward",
she remarked. She also commended the services rendered by the Sri
Lanka College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in preventing
maternal mortality and sexually transmitted diseases and upgrading
child nutrition in the country.
Dr.
Marlene Abeywardena became the second lady doctor to be appointed
as the President of the College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.
She is a past student of St. Bridget's Convent. Mrs. Kumaratunga
also congratulated Dr. Abeywardena who had studied in the same school
as she did and said that she was also personally satisfied as they
were close friends. Obstetricians and gynaecologists from the entire
island took part in the induction ceremony. |
