By

Right arm pacie Umhar Samsudeen with figures of 4 for 45 ripped
through the threatening Bens batting line up with some hostile bowling
to give the Peterites a thrilling first innings win in their Elephant
Lemonade Cup inter-school cricket match concluded at Bambalapitiya
yesterday.
The
Benedictines resuming on their overnight score of 64 for no loss
were cruising well with the openers putting on over 100 runs and
at tea they were sitting pretty on 244 for 4 and were on course
in putting up a large score. But once Umhar, who has been their
main striker having claimed the first hat trick for this season,
was introduced the Bens wickets fell like nine pins and the remaining
six wickets fell for the addition of just 44.

Bandula Warnapura of Nalanda and Duleep Mendis of S. Thomas' were

St. Sebastian's College riding the crest of a wave of successes
in the ongoing schools cricket season, scored a hard fought first
innings win over St.Joseph's College in the Inter-School cricket
match concluded at Darley Road yesterday.
\ Played
on a newly laid pitch which resembled a dust bowl, the spinners
on both sides called the tune. The Moratuwa school, who registered
a sensational outright win over Nalanda after conceding first innings
points at Moratuwa are still to be beaten on the first innings.
They notched up their first outright win over Sri Jayawardenapura,
beat S. Thomas' on the first innings and their matches against Royal
and Trinity ended in no decisions due to fickle weather.
In
yesterday's match against the Josephians they had to fight hard.
Invited to bat first the Moratuwa school, thanks to an 88-run third
wicket stand between stand-in skipper Neomal Fernando (73) and Tharaka
Peiris (44). Right arm leg spinner Ranesh Perera bowled best to
capture 4 for 66.
The
Joes in reply were sitting pretty (overnight 123 for 3), aided and
abetted by a determined third wicket stand between Hashan Gunatilleke
(50 with six fours) and P.Pallewela (37 with six fours).
Resuming
their innings, the Josephians lost their wickets at regular intervals
against the wiles of leg spinner Lahiru Anthony and were struggling
at 199 for 9 at lunch.
