Attack
on mayor: Police draw blank
Police
is yet to get a breakthrough in the incident where Matale Mayor
Hilimy Mohamed's house was attacked with a hand grenade on new year's
day.
Mr.
Mohamed who was in the residence at the time of the attack narrowly
escaped, but damage was caused to the house on Dole road, Matale.
Mr. Mohamed explaining the incident said that shortly after New
Year had dawned, the grenade had been lobbed into his bedroom setting
off a huge explosion, but he had narrowly escaped without injury.
"The
time was around 2 a.m when I heard a loud bang. When I woke up I
saw the curtain burning. I immediately jumped out of the room for
help and ran out," he said.
The
man who had lobbed the grenade had scaled the wall and thrown the
grenade into the room despite two policemen being on duty in front
of the house. Mr. Mohamed said he believed that attack was politically
motivated and was an attempt on his life.
