Panic
              decision: PM

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe last night said that President
Chandrika Kumaratunga will have to give "valid reasons"
for her sudden decision to dissolve Parliament and called it a "panic
decision" to overcome defeat at the scheduled Provincial Council
              elections.
             He
said that the JVP was also finding it hard to sustain its anti-government
agitation campaign it had just launched. He told The Sunday Times
last night that it was only on February 4 that she called for a
grander national alliance of all parties to co-operate in national
reconciliation, and said that the Mano-Malik talks were still in
              progress.
             The
Premier was returning to Colombo this morning. He would be cancelling
his scheduled visit to Thailand tomorrow for a foreign investment
              seminar. |
