Half
a million more voters
The electoral register for 2002 will be the one used for the forthcoming
General Election, which has been fixed for April 2. According to
figures provided by the Elections Commissioner's Department a total
of 12,899,032 voters are eligible to cast their vote at this year's
election. This is an increase of 470,824 voters from the 12,428,208
registered voters at the previous general election held in 2001.
Applications
for postal votes will be received by Returning Officers from tomorrow
till February 23. The 2002 electoral registers relevant to all electoral
districts are now open to the public for examination, during office
hours at the District Secretariats, Kachcheries and certain other
selected locations.
Though
around 165,000 upcountry estate workers gained citizenship they
are not eligible to vote in the forthcoming election, the Election's
Department said. |
