Odds and Ends

Demoted
After the new head of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) Major General Trond Furuhovde met with President Chandrika Kumaratunga on Thursday, the President' s office issued a press release giving the names of those present on the occasion. In the process of releasing the names, the Secretariat also demoted Lieutenant General Lionel Balagalle to the rank of Major General Balagalle.

A foretaste?
Early on Friday, a drunken motorcyclist knocked down a policeman at Slave Island. This was followed by a heated argument between the slightly injured policeman and the motorcyclist was sent away. Soon after the Police received a call from a the newly appointed PA organiser for Colombo Central informing him the arrested man was one of his friends and there was no need to follow up the case.

If this is their behaviour while out of office, we can only imagine what their behaviour would be like if they are ever elected.

Holding empty plates
Scribes who were covering a press conference given by two Cabinet Ministers at the Gramodya Centre on Tuesday were handed side plates even before the briefing commenced.

The conference started and continued for about an hour but throughout they were left holding the empty plates. It was only once the briefing was over that they were asked to go outside and serve themselves.

More sheaves to come
The United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) was finally allocated the betel leaf as its party symbol by the Elections Commissioner last week. The two earlier choices of the lotus flower and the butterfly were rejected. Alliance members will be hoping this will be the first of many a bulath ath they will be receiving in the days and months ahead.
