Tyronne
on National List; GL, Marapana asked to contest
Foreign
Minister Tyronne Fernando will enter Parliament on the UNF National
List at the forthcoming Parliamentary elections. Mr. Fernando contested
the last general election from the Colombo district and was elected
to Parliament. He first entered Parliament in 1976 and continues
to be an MP ever since.
The
Sunday Times learns that Ministers G.L. Peiris and Tilak Marapana
who entered Parliament on the National List last time have been
told to contest elections.
The
UNF will hold a special national convention next Sunday in Colombo
and launch its polls campaign from Kandy on February 26. Meanwhile
SLFP stalwart Anuruddha Ratwatte has already begun his poster campaign
in Kandy in spite of opposition from senior members of his own party
against nomination being given to him.
In
another development, senior UNF members are holding talks with some
PA members to woo them to cross over before finalising nomination
lists. Yesterday the Minuwangoda Pradeshiya Sabha's PA opposition
leader Palitha Lihiniyakumara crossed over to the UNP. His membership
was handed over by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe at Sirikotha. |
