Sri
Lanka aid talks in Washington as scheduled
The meeting of the Sri Lanka donor co-chairs will go ahead as scheduled
in Washington on Tuesday despite the political turmoil after the
dissolution of parliament.
Top
level delegations from the United States, Japan, the European Union
and Norway are to attend the meeting to review the situation in
Sri Lanka and the aid flow from the package pledged at last year's
Tokyo meeting.
The
meeting takes place amidst calls by the LTTE for the international
community to provide direct financial assistance to projects in
the North and East in view of the deadlock in the peace process.
The Government has expressed fears that the sudden dissolution of
Parliament will have an impact on the decision to release funds.
US
Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage, and Assistant Secretary
of State Christina Rocca will represent the host country, while
Japan will be represented by peace envoy Yasushi Akashi with Deputy
Foreign Minister Vidar Helgeson and Special Envoy Eric Solheim representing
Norway.
The
European Union will be represented by Foreign Relations Deputy Director
Harve Jouanjean and Irish Ambassador to the US Noel Fahey. |
