EPDP
says Tigers ban campaign
EPDP Chief Douglas Devananda has alleged that an LTTE ban on house-to-house
campaigns and public rallies by non-TNA parties has crippled rival
parties in the rebel-controlled areas. Mr. Devananda said he had
complained to the Police Chief and asked protection for EPDP candidates.
He
said the EPDP was using alternative methods such as loudhailers
on vehicles and loudspeakers in their camps to convey their election
message. Mr. Devananda said they were relaying through their public
address systems some of the broadcasts from the anti-LTTE Tamil
International Radio.
Eight
parties and two independent groups are contesting the elections
in Jaffna, but most of them are not actively campaigning. Among
those contesting are the Jathika Hela Urumaya and the Ruhunu Janatha
Party.
The
main parties, the UNF and the UPFA, did not hand over nominations
for the north while in the Trincomalee and Wanni districts the UPFA
was able to field only one Tamil candidate. The LTTE had earlier
sent out a warning that Tamils should not contest under the main
parties. |
