JHU
condemns state media campaign against monks contesting general elections
The Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) has condemned the action on the part
of the State media to affront the Maha Sangha contesting the forthcoming
elections.
In
a letter sent to Information Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar, JHU General
Secretary Thilak Karunaratne said all state media institutions have
launched a campaign to sling mud at the monks who are contesting
the elections, to the disgust of the Buddhists and society at large.
He
said as the monks contesting are those who have launched a struggle
against fundamentalism, the attempt to slung mud at them is the
work of fundamentalists.
He
further said that it is the bikkhus who have no knowledge of doctrines,
disciplines and Sinhala bikkhu traditions and those having a higher
regard for politicians rather than the Lord Buddha, who are against
the decision of the bikkhus to contest the polls. He said that they
along with the state media, are fulfilling the needs of the fundamentalists.
JHU
Propaganda Secretary Udaya Gammanpila told The Sunday Times the
Jathika Hela Urumaya had expressed the hope that the Minister would
give an opportunity for the Uththarithara Mandalaya (Superior Council)
of the JHU to answer the charges. |
