No
bird flu in Lanka says Poultry Association
The Avian or bird flu has had no impact on Sri Lankan poultry products.
The All Island Poultry Association has given this assurance to consumers
to allay their fears to buy poultry products.
The
association members called on President Chandrika Kumaratunga to
express their concern about the adverse publicity about the bird
flu which has caused panic among Sri Lankans.
They
said that people have panicked and have begun to shun all poultry
products causing a devastating effect on the local poultry industry.
The Association said the industry had grown from the early 50s to
an important rural based industry.
"Our
studies show this industry sustains the livelihood of about one
million people, several of them beneficiaries of State welfare programmes",
said an association member.
The
Association has assured that Sri Lankans need not fear as the Department
of Animal Production and Health in Sri Lanka has taken effective
measures to prevent the bird flu invasion to Sri Lanka. |
