Waterless
residents get CEB shock
By Nalaka Nonis
Residents in Colombo and its suburbs were badly affected by the
prevailing water cuts and several areas are yet to recover from
the crisis. The National Water Supply and Drainage Board has assured
the public that the situation would improve today.
Individuals
and organisations complained they hadn't received water for two
to three days while some said the water they received was salty.
People in Maharagama, Kollupitiya and Modera said they were badly
affected by the water cuts.
A
resident from Maharagama said they did not receive water for the
past two days and were forced to buy drinking water. Another resident
from Modara complained that the little water they received was salty.
A
spokesperson for the Durdans Hospital told The Sunday Times it hadn't
received water for two days and they were obtaining water in bowsers.
Ratnam Hospital officials said they received only a little water
yesterday.
NWSDB
Assistant General Manager R.S.C. George said people should use water
sparingly without using it for gardening, washing vehicles or such
purposes until the rains. He also requested the public to inform
the Board of any leakages.
Meanwhile
the CEB said as the generation of hydro electricity was being severely
curtailed by the drought it hoped to operate the standby 100 KVA
diesel plant.
It
appealed to institutions and industries to use their standby generators
to ease the national grid. CEB sources said the Government has decided
to grant an incentive of Rs. 3 for each self-generated unit of electricity.
Further
details could be obtained regarding this incentive from the nearest
CEB Area Engineer they added. |
