Prabha
will consider a pardon
LTTE political wing leader S.P. Thamilselvan said yesterday that
the LTTE leadership was prepared to consider an apology from rebel
commander Karuna.
Mr.
Thamilselvan told a news conference in Kilinochchi that he believed
there would be no major repercussions from the sacking of Karuna
as other eastern leaders had pledged their loyalty to the LTTE leadership.
"If Karuna apologises to our leader Velupillai Prabhakaran,
he will consider a pardon," Mr. Thamilselvan said.
Mr.
Thamilselvan appealed to the people of the east to remain calm until
the new commanders took over and the command structures were put
in place. Responding to the allegations made by Karuna in a letter
sent to the LTTE leader earlier, Mr. Thamilselvan said the allegations
were untrue.
Karuna
in his letter had said that cadres from the Eastern Province were
being given less prominence. Mr. Thamilselvan said there were persons
from the Eastern Province as well holding important positions and
that Karuna himself was a central committee member working close
to the leader. He pointed out that peace secretariat chief Pulithevan
was from the east.
He
also denied the allegation by Karuna that Mr. Prabhakaran wanted
1000 cadres sent from the east to the north. The new commander Ramesh
responding to a question said he had come to the north to resolve
the crisis as soon as possible as the people in the east were concerned.
Mr.
Thamilselvan said he believed that the general election would not
be affected by the crisis adding that his leader had given instructions
that there should be no violence during the polls.
Responding
to a question on recent killings in the east, he said a third party
might be involved but declined to elaborate further. |
