Karuna
holding firm in east
The LTTE's deposed eastern military wing leader Karuna is reported
to be holding to his base in the eastern province with cadres loyal
to him remaining with him in the region.
The
Sunday Times learns that Karuna has confined himself to a base in
the LTTE-controlled Batticaloa district after the news that he was
sacked from the movement.
His
loyalists had burnt down political offices operated by new eastern
Commander Ramesh and political wing leader Kaushalyan. The offices
were burnt down and leader Velupillai Prabhakaran's pictures damaged,
reports said. The incidents were likely to delay the return of Ramesh
to the Eastern Province to take over from Karuna.
LTTE
leader Prabhakaran was due to meet with Ramesh, Political wing leader
Thamilselvan and Intelligence chief Pottu Amman about the developments.
The Associated Press news agency quoted an unnamed spokesman of
Karuna as saying they were prepared to counter any challenge from
the north, if they were attacked. But he said they did not believe
that the split could lead to fighting between the two factions. |
