Foreign
observers begin work
Polls observers representing the European Union and the Commonwealth
are arriving in the country ahead of the April 2 general elections.
Those
who have already arrived are meeting political party representatives,
Elections Department officials, members of local polls monitoring
groups and the police.
John
Cushnahan, head of the 67-strong EU polls observer team, said the
observers with a cumulative experience of more than 1000 elections
throughout the world, were from 13 of the 15 EU member-states.
He
said the observers would be deployed in teams of two to monitor
the opening of polling stations, voting process, counting of ballots
and the tabulation of votes at local and national level. Mr. Cushnahan
said he would visit Jaffna, Batticaloa and Trincomalee over the
weekend to assess the situation there.
Meanwhile
the 14-member Commonwealth team met Elections Commissioner on Thursday
and discussed matters regarding their mission. |
