LTTE
gives house-to-house lessons on voting – for TNA’s House
symbol
The LTTE has started a house-to-house campaign to educate voters
in Kilinochchi on how to vote - with the model being a specimen
ballot paper, significantly with the TNA symbol – House.
LTTE
cadres who are fully and openly backing the TNA are giving voters
detailed instructions on how to cast their vote and how a vote could
get spoilt.
The
Sunday Times learns that the LTTE embarked on this campaign after
learning that thousands of voters were not familiar with the procedure
because there had been no proper general elections in the North
for more than two decades.
As
for the 70,000 voters who are displaced in Kilinochchi, the LTTE
has reportedly told Grama Sevaka officials to ensure they get their
polling cards. Apart from the house-to-house campaign, posters have
come up in public places on how to cast the vote with a specimen
of the ballot paper.
Meanwhile,
the LTTE has asked the NGOs in Jaffna to give about Rs. 5,000 each
for breakfast and lunch to be provided to voters in the district.
At a meeting on Thursday with the NGO council, representing 40 NGOs
in the area, LTTE representatives had explained that the voter feeding
project would be organised through the Tamil Rehabilitation Organisation
(TRO), the funding organisation of the LTTE. According to Jaffna
sources, the move is part of the LTTE strategy to win over the voters
of the LTTE-held areas. |
