In almost all of the districts which the Freedom Alliance has won the JVP nominees have been able to notch up the top slots in the preferential vote race. This includes Colombo, Gampaha, Galle, Kurunegala, Kegalle, Ratnapura and Kalutara.

In Colombo Wimal Weerawansa was ahead of UPFA group leader Susil Premjayanth while Anura Bandaranaike the Gampaha group leader was behind his JVP counterpart Vijitha Herath. In Ratnapura district, all three top slots were occupied by JVP members and the same result was seen in Galle, In Kurunegala JVP nominee Anura Kumara Dissanayake was the leading candidate.

In Matara and Hambantota, SLFP heavyweights Mangala Samaraweera and Mahinda Rajapakse had their JVP counterparts hot on their trail. According to some SLFP sources, the JVP had at one stage broken away from the mainline UPFA campaign to launch its own blitz, promoting its nominees. They said that due to a Presidential directive, the SLFP had called off its poster campaign midway, but the JVP had gone on pasting posters till the last day.
