ITAK MPs offer support to UPFA?
The Ilankai Tamil Arasu Katchi, the political front of the TNA,
which won 22 seats in the North-East during Friday's polls has split
in two, according to reports from Batticaloa.
While
17 members elected in the North will support the LTTE-led by Velupillai
Prabhakaran, five others will back renegade eastern leader, Karuna.
These five constitute four ITAK members elected from the Batticaloa
district and one from the Digamadulla (Ampara) district.
Former
parliamentarian Joseph Pararajasingham, who was a dissident among
the ITAK Batticaloa contestants and supported Mr. Prabhakaran, failed
to secure the required number of preference votes at Friday's polls.
Consequently he has lost the elections. The Sunday Times learns
that the five members of the Karuna faction last night conveyed
their intention to support the UPFA. |
